Our experts are professionals who have graduated from an extensive clinical program at a School of Optometry. An optometrist, or Doctor of Optometry (OD), is a healthcare professional who provides Primary Vision Care ranging from sight testing and correction to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye disease such as diabetes and hypertension.

Dr. Joan Hansen, Vancouver BC


Dr. Joan Hansen is an optometrist in private practice in Tsawwassen, British Columbia. Dr. Hansen is originally from Manitoba and earned her Doctor of Optometry from the School of Optometry, University of Waterloo graduating in 1979. She practiced in Winnipeg, Manitoba for several years prior to moving to B.C. She is also active in her community, including as President, Tsawwassen Rotary Club, 1999-2000. She currently sits as a public member on the Engineers Association of BC (APEGBC), and as a member of the Delta Police Board. Leisure time activities include gardening.

Dr. Carol Doman, Bedford, NS


Dr. Doman graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry degree in 2003. Since that time she has worked in Nova Scotia and in 2007 became co-owner of Eyes on Bedford, an Optometry Clinic in Bedford, Nova Scotia (a suburb of Halifax). Specific clinical interests include pediatric optometry and contact lenses. As an active member of the Optometry profession she is currently a Council Member and Secretary/Treasurer of the Nova Scotia Association of Optometrists. She is also extensively involved with public education at the provincial and national levels. Personal interests include traveling, golf, figure skating and cross-country skiing.

Dr. Henry Smit, Truro, NS


Dr. Henry Smit graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 1979 and has practiced in Truro, Nova Scotia since 1980. He is a former president of the Nova Scotia Association of Optometrists and is currently Nova Scotia’s representative on the Council of the Canadian Association of Optometrists. He enjoys playing the piano, kayaking, hiking and biking.

Dr. Langis Michaud, Montreal, QC


Dr. Langis Michaud graduated from School of Optometry at the Université de Montréal in 1986 where he also obtained his Master’s Degree in physiological optics. He also received a 3rd cycle diploma from École Nationale d’Administration Publique in Montréal. He has been Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry since 1989 and one of the 10 Canadians appointed Cornea and Contact Lens Diplomate by the AAO since 1994. Moreover, he has been a proctor and a resource-expert for this AAO section since 1997.
Dr. Michaud has practiced at the Université de Montréal since 2001, focusing mainly on contact lenses and anterior segment diseases. He is involved in numerous clinical studies for pharmaceutical and contact lens companies and sits on the advisory board of a number of these firms.
Because of his expertise he has often been invited to speak in Europe, Asia, and United States where, on many occasions, he was invited to address the American Academy of Optometry in Ellerbrock, the largest and well-reknown continuous education meeting in optometry.

Dr. Virginia Donati, Bolton, ON

Dr. Virginia Donati graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2006. She also graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2002, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Virginia practices jointly out of Bolton and Brampton, Ontario. She has a special interest in binocular vision & visual perception, and contact lenses. In her free time, Dr. Donati enjoys swimming and crochet.

Dr. Sonja Gascoyne, Grand Falls Windsor, NL


Dr. Gascoyne has worked for over ten years in primary eye care, and surgery and hospital optometry. After qualifying as an optometrist at the University of Bradford, UK in 1999, she joined the Royal College of Optometrists and the British Association of Optometrists.
Dr. Gascoyne is a councillor for the National Public Education Committee as well as the Newfoundland Association of Optometrists and the Diabetic Committee for Newfoundland.
Her interests include reading, art, theatre, shopping, hiking, skating and gymnastics.
